The ITV Import Test in Spain
Everything your vehicle needs to pass the Spanish import inspection and move one step closer to Spanish plates.
The ITV Import Test in Spain
The ITV test is Spain’s official vehicle inspection, but when a vehicle is being imported and registered onto Spanish plates, it is much more than a normal roadworthiness test.
For an imported vehicle, the ITV station also needs to check that the vehicle matches its original homologation, that the correct technical paperwork is available, and that the vehicle can be issued with a Spanish Ficha Técnica.
What is an ITV Import Test?
An import ITV is the technical inspection required before a foreign registered vehicle can normally be registered onto Spanish number plates.
The ITV station checks the vehicle’s identity, condition, technical specification and documentation before issuing the Spanish Ficha Técnica, which is one of the key documents needed for final registration with Tráfico.
More Than a Standard ITV
A normal ITV mainly checks that a Spanish registered vehicle remains roadworthy. An import ITV goes further because the vehicle is being entered into the Spanish system for the first time.
This means the ITV station also has to verify the vehicle’s original approval, technical characteristics, measurements, emissions data and any modifications or accessories fitted to the vehicle.
Homologation and Technical Paperwork
One of the most important parts of the ITV import test is proving that the vehicle is homologated and suitable for registration in Spain.
In most cases, the ITV station will need one of the following documents:
Certificate of Conformity
A Certificate of Conformity, often called a CoC, is usually issued by the manufacturer and confirms the vehicle’s European approval details, technical specification and emissions information.
Ficha Técnica Reducida
A Ficha Técnica Reducida is a technical document prepared for the specific vehicle. It is commonly used where a CoC is not available, not suitable, or where the ITV station requires the vehicle data in this format.
Without the correct technical paperwork, the ITV station may not be able to complete the import inspection or issue the Spanish Ficha Técnica.
What Does the ITV Station Check?
The exact checks depend on the vehicle type, age, country of origin and condition, but an import ITV will normally include the standard safety checks as well as additional technical checks.
- Vehicle identity and chassis number
- Foreign registration documents
- Brakes, steering and suspension
- Tyres, wheels and approved sizes
- Lights, indicators, fog lights and reflectors
- Emissions, noise and environmental data
- Seatbelts, mirrors, glass and safety equipment
UK Vehicles and Lighting
UK right-hand-drive vehicles often need particular attention before the ITV test, especially with headlights and rear fog lights.
Headlights must dip correctly for driving on the right-hand side of the road, and the rear fog light arrangement must be acceptable for use in Spain.
In many cases, these items can be checked and corrected before the ITV appointment, helping to reduce the risk of the vehicle failing the test.
We also offer a dedicated headlight realignment service for imported vehicles, where we can assess whether your headlights can be adjusted, converted or need replacing before the ITV import test.
Common Reasons Imported Vehicles Fail the ITV
Many ITV import problems are caused by issues that can often be identified before the appointment. Some of the most common problems include:
How Long Does the Test Take?
The vehicle is normally only needed for the ITV appointment itself. A left-hand-drive vehicle that is already test-ready may only take around one or two hours.
A UK right-hand-drive vehicle may take longer if headlights or rear lights need checking or adapting before the inspection.
What Happens After the ITV?
Once the vehicle passes the import ITV, the ITV station issues the Spanish Ficha Técnica.
This document is then used with the rest of the registration file to complete the process with Tráfico. Once registration is approved, the vehicle can be issued with Spanish number plates.

How Often Does a Vehicle Need an ITV in Spain?
Once a vehicle is registered in Spain, the future ITV frequency depends on the vehicle category, age and classification shown on the Spanish Ficha Técnica.
| Vehicle Type | Age of Vehicle | ITV Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Cars / passenger vehicles up to 9 seats | Up to 4 years | Exempt |
| Cars / passenger vehicles up to 9 seats | From 4 to 10 years | Every 2 years |
| Cars / passenger vehicles up to 9 seats | Over 10 years | Every year |
| Motorcycles, three-wheel vehicles, quadricycles and quads | Up to 4 years | Exempt |
| Motorcycles, three-wheel vehicles, quadricycles and quads | Over 4 years | Every 2 years |
| Commercial goods vehicles up to 3,500kg MMA | Up to 2 years | Exempt |
| Commercial goods vehicles up to 3,500kg MMA | From 2 to 6 years | Every 2 years |
| Commercial goods vehicles up to 3,500kg MMA | From 6 to 10 years | Every year |
| Commercial goods vehicles up to 3,500kg MMA | Over 10 years | Every 6 months |
| Commercial goods vehicles over 3,500kg MMA | Up to 10 years | Every year |
| Commercial goods vehicles over 3,500kg MMA | Over 10 years | Every 6 months |
Please note: ITV frequency can vary for taxis, driving school vehicles, buses, historic vehicles, mixed-use vehicles and other special categories. The vehicle’s classification on the Spanish Ficha Técnica is what determines the final ITV schedule.
Is the ITV Import Test Difficult?
It can be straightforward if the vehicle is standard, the documents are correct and the technical data matches. However, small issues can quickly delay the registration process.
This is why it is important to check the paperwork and vehicle specification before booking or presenting the vehicle for inspection.
Can We Arrange the ITV?
Yes. We can check the paperwork, arrange the correct technical documents, prepare the vehicle where required and manage the ITV import test as part of the registration process.
Our aim is to make the process as efficient, cost-effective and stress-free as possible.
ITV Import Test FAQs
Is an import ITV the same as a normal ITV?
No. It includes the normal safety checks, but also involves a technical and homologation review so the ITV station can issue the Spanish Ficha Técnica.
Do I always need a Certificate of Conformity?
Not always. If a CoC is not available or is not suitable, a Ficha Técnica Reducida may be required instead.
Can a vehicle fail because of modifications?
Yes. Modifications or accessories that do not match the vehicle’s approved specification may need to be legalised, removed or supported with additional technical documentation.
Does the vehicle need to stay with you for days?
Normally no. In most cases, the vehicle is only needed for the ITV appointment itself and any checks or adjustments that are required beforehand.
