Vehicle Not Qualifying for a DGT Sticker?

If your vehicle appears not to qualify, missing Euro emissions data may be the reason. Here’s how to get it corrected.

DGT EMISSIONS STICKER GUIDE

How to Get an Emissions Sticker When Your Vehicle Does Not Appear to Qualify

Sometimes a vehicle may appear not to qualify for a Spanish environmental sticker simply because the correct Euro emissions status is not recorded on the Spanish vehicle file.

In many cases, this can be corrected by obtaining official confirmation from the manufacturer and having the vehicle's ficha técnica updated before requesting an amendment with the DGT.

Why Does This Happen?

The DGT environmental sticker system depends on the information recorded against the vehicle. If the vehicle's Euro emissions standard is missing or incorrectly recorded, the vehicle may not be recognised as qualifying for the sticker it should be entitled to.

This is particularly common with imported vehicles, older registrations, or vehicles where the original emissions data was not fully transferred into the Spanish system.

What Information Is Needed?

The key information is the vehicle's official Euro emissions status, often shown as the V.9 emissions classification on the registration or technical documentation.

If this is not already shown clearly on the Spanish file, the ITV station and DGT will normally require official manufacturer evidence before the record can be amended.

STEP BY STEP PROCESS

How to Request the Correction

If your vehicle does not appear to qualify for a DGT environmental sticker, the following process may help you correct the vehicle record and request the sticker again.

1

Check with the Manufacturer

Contact the vehicle manufacturer or official representative and ask if they can supply a letter confirming the vehicle's Euro emissions status.

2

Ask About the Cost

Most manufacturers usually charge for this letter. As a general guide, the cost is often around €65, although this can vary depending on the manufacturer.

3

Make Sure It Has a CSV Code

The manufacturer letter must include a valid CSV authentication code so that the document can be verified as official.

4

Go to the ITV Station

Take the vehicle's ficha técnica and the official manufacturer letter to an ITV station. They will review the documentation and confirm whether the emissions status can be added.

5

ITV Adds the Euro Status

The ITV station will normally add the confirmed Euro emissions status under the Observaciones section of the ficha técnica.

6

Check for ITV Fees

Many ITV stations do not charge extra for this type of annotation, but some stations may apply a fee. It is always worth checking before attending.

7

Submit the Updated Ficha to DGT

Once the ficha técnica has been updated, it can be submitted to the DGT to request an amendment to the vehicle record. Once corrected, the environmental sticker can then be requested again.

Important Point

This process does not change the vehicle's actual emissions standard. It simply allows the official vehicle record to be corrected where the Euro status was missing or not properly recorded.

Whether the vehicle qualifies for a sticker will still depend on the DGT's criteria and the emissions category confirmed by the manufacturer.
