Registering a Trailer in Spain
Registering a trailer onto Spanish plates can be more complicated than many people expect. The exact position depends on the trailer’s maximum permitted mass, its paperwork, and whether it has the necessary approval documentation for registration in Spain.
In general, lighter unbraked trailers may fall outside formal registration requirements, while larger or braked trailers will normally need to be registered and tested before they can be used legally in Spain.
Rules
As a general rule, if you have an unbraked trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MMA) of 750 kg or less, it is not normally subject to full registration in Spain.
For braked trailers, and for trailers with an MMA of more than 750 kg, registration is normally required before use in Spain.
Manufacturer / VIN Plate
The maximum permitted mass of the trailer can usually be found on the manufacturer plate or, if you already have registration paperwork, on line F.1 of the trailer registration document.
Checking this figure at the outset is essential, as it determines whether registration is likely to be required.
EU Type Approval
It is also important to check whether the trailer has European Type Approval. If it does not, registration in Spain may be difficult or may require additional technical work, testing or specialist reports.
In many cases, you can check whether EU type approval is present on the manufacturer or VIN plate.
ITV Test
As you would expect, trailers that require registration will also need to be inspected at an authorised ITV station.
This will normally require the correct technical documentation, such as a European Certificate of Conformity or a Ficha Reducida, together with the trailer’s existing registration documentation where available.
UK Trailers
If you have a UK trailer, it is quite common not to have the sort of registration document that Spain expects to see when processing an import or registration.
That can create an additional step, as the trailer may need supporting documentation before a Spanish registration can be attempted.
Registration Date
With UK trailers in particular, the registration date and documentary history can sometimes create complications, especially where approval status and first use need to be established clearly.
In some cases, additional confirmation from the manufacturer or supplying dealer may be needed in order to support the registration process in Spain.
Plates and Documents
Once a trailer is successfully registered in Spain, it will normally be issued with Spanish documentation, and those documents should be kept with the trailer in case they are requested by the police or Guardia Civil.
Registered trailers also require the correct Spanish plate format for their category.
Complications
As with many vehicle registrations, trailer registrations can become technical quite quickly. Approval status, missing paperwork, ITV requirements and country of origin can all affect whether a trailer can be registered and how much the process is likely to cost.
