There is still plenty of confusion about how long a foreign-registered vehicle can legally be driven in Spain. The key factor is normally your residency and normal place of residence... not your nationality.
The rules are very different for genuine non-residents and people who have become resident in Spain. This guide explains the main time limits, the documents you should carry and when Spanish registration is required.
Visiting Spain Temporarily?
A genuine non-resident can normally use a foreign-registered private vehicle temporarily in Spain for up to six months. The precise calculation can depend on the vehicle's country of registration and the customs or tax regime that applies.
You should be able to show that your normal residence remains outside Spain and provide credible evidence of when the vehicle entered the country.
Living Permanently in Spain?
The six-month allowance does not apply simply because the vehicle still carries foreign plates. As a general rule, residents of Spain must register an imported vehicle onto Spanish plates.
The normal deadline is 30 days from the start of its use in Spain. This can extend to 60 days where the vehicle is being imported following a qualifying transfer of normal residence and the relevant tax exemption applies.
The Six-Month Rule Explained
The six-month allowance is intended for genuine temporary visits. It is not a general permission for someone who lives in Spain to keep using a foreign-registered vehicle indefinitely.
Normal Residence
You should be able to demonstrate that your normal home, work or main personal ties remain outside Spain.
Private Use
The vehicle should normally be used privately and should not be rented, sold, lent or transferred in a way that breaches the temporary-use conditions.
Evidence of Entry
Keep ferry tickets, toll receipts, travel bookings or other evidence showing when the vehicle entered Spain.
Foreign Registration
The vehicle must remain correctly registered, insured and roadworthy under the rules of its country of registration.
What Must Remain Valid?
While a vehicle remains on foreign plates, it must continue to comply with the legal requirements that apply to that registration and must be properly covered for use in Spain.
Documents to Carry
Keep the original documents with you, or officially certified copies where these are accepted:
- Valid driving licence
- Vehicle registration document or logbook
- Valid MOT or roadworthiness certificate
- Proof of insurance valid in Spain
- Proof that your normal residence is outside Spain
- Evidence showing when the vehicle entered Spain
If the Vehicle Is Not Yours
Carry written authorisation from the registered keeper confirming that you have permission to use the vehicle. For a hired, leased or company vehicle, keep the relevant contract and supporting paperwork.
Extra care is needed where a foreign vehicle is being driven by a Spanish resident. Limited exceptions can apply, but the general rule for residents is that the vehicle should be registered in Spain.
Additional Requirements for British Vehicles
A UK-registered vehicle being used temporarily abroad must remain legal in the UK. In practice, this normally means keeping its UK registration, vehicle tax, MOT and insurance valid while it remains on UK plates.
Low Emission Zones
Many Spanish cities operate Low Emission Zones, known as Zonas de Bajas Emisiones or ZBE. Access rules are controlled locally and can vary from one municipality to another.
Foreign vehicles may need advance registration or proof of their emissions category in some cities. Check the local rules before entering a restricted urban area.
V16 Beacons and Warning Triangles
Since 1 January 2026, a connected V16 warning beacon is the legal warning device for Spanish-registered vehicles.
Foreign-registered vehicles in international circulation may continue to carry and use warning triangles, or an equivalent warning device accepted under the rules of their country of registration.
What Can Happen If the Vehicle Is Not Legal?
Driving a foreign-registered vehicle outside the permitted conditions can lead to more than a routine traffic fine. Depending on the circumstances, the authorities may investigate unpaid registration or import taxes and may prevent the vehicle from continuing its journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a quick border trip restart the six-month period?
Not automatically. A short trip out of Spain does not change your normal residence or necessarily create a new temporary-use entitlement. The overall pattern of use and the evidence available can be considered.
Can a Spanish resident drive a foreign-plated vehicle?
The general rule is no: a resident should use a vehicle registered in Spain. There are limited exceptions, including certain qualifying company, rental or temporary arrangements, but these should be checked carefully before the vehicle is used.
What are Spanish green plates?
Green plates are temporary Spanish registration plates that can allow a vehicle to circulate while its permanent Spanish registration is being completed. The initial permit is normally valid for 60 days, with extensions possible in justified cases.
Can I keep a foreign vehicle permanently at my Spanish holiday home?

Do foreign vehicles need a Spanish environmental sticker?
