VEHICLE DE-REGISTRATION

De-Registering Your Vehicle in Spain

If you are planning to take your vehicle out of Spain permanently, for example to return it to the UK or move it to another country and register it there, it is important to officially de-register the vehicle in Spain.

This process is known as baja definitiva por exportación, which is the final de-registration of a vehicle for export. At Car Registrations Spain, we can handle the process for you correctly and provide the official documentation for your peace of mind.

What is Baja Definitiva por Exportación?

This is the official process of removing a vehicle from the Spanish vehicle register because it is being permanently exported and registered in another country.

Once completed, the DGT records the vehicle as exported and no longer active in Spain.

Avoiding Problems Later On

Failing to de-register a vehicle properly can cause problems in the future, as the car may still appear as active in the Spanish system even though it has left the country.

That can lead to unnecessary tax demands, confusion over ownership records, and potential issues if the vehicle is later involved in an offence abroad.

Why You Need to De-Register the Vehicle

Officially de-registering your vehicle in Spain helps protect you from future problems and ensures the vehicle record is updated correctly.

1

Avoid Future Taxes

If the vehicle remains registered in Spain, you may still be billed for IVTM (road tax) by the relevant Town Hall.

2

Prevent Future Liability

If the vehicle is involved in an offence abroad while still recorded on Spanish plates, you could still appear as the legal owner.

3

Keep Records Correct

The DGT will record the vehicle as exported and no longer linked to you within the Spanish vehicle database.

The De-Registration Process

We can handle the de-registration process on your behalf from start to finish. This typically includes preparing the export file, checking that the documentation meets DGT requirements, submitting the application to remove the vehicle from the Spanish register and providing you with the official de-registration certificate once the process has been completed.

Our aim is to make the process clear, straightforward and properly handled so that you can move the vehicle out of Spain with confidence that the Spanish side has been closed correctly.

What We Normally Need From You

To process the de-registration, we will usually need the following:

  • A copy of the Permiso de Circulación (Spanish log book)
  • Your Spanish ID documentation, such as TIE, DNI or NIE certificate, together with passport where applicable
  • Proof that the vehicle has been or will be registered in the acquiring country, such as registration documents, MOT or equivalent supporting evidence

Important Timing

In most cases, it is best to de-register the vehicle after it has been successfully registered in the new country.

That way, you can usually continue to use the vehicle until the new registration has been completed. De-registering too early can leave you with a vehicle that is no longer properly active in Spain but not yet fully registered elsewhere.

Need Advice Before You Export Your Vehicle?

Every case can be slightly different depending on where the vehicle is going and what stage you are at in the re-registration process abroad.

We are happy to advise you on the best timing, the documents likely to be required and how to handle the Spanish de-registration correctly.
