How much does it cost?

The cost of importing your car or other vehicle type onto Spanish Number Plates depends on a number of factors and there can even be a differences between the various regions of Spain that all have slightly different tax levies. However the majority of the cost of import is based on vehicle value and the CO2 emissions.

Calculating Import Duty / Registration Tax

Registration tax will be somewhere between 0% and 15.9% of the vehicles value with the calculation being based on both the value and the CO2 emissions. As you'd expect, the lower the vehicle value and particularly the CO2 emissions, the lower the import duty.

Other taxes and payments

There are a number of other smaller taxes and fees to be paid when importing your vehicle on to Spanish Plates and these can vary slightly depending on the region that you live, including a fee to be paid to the local town hall (ayuntamiento) and also to the local traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico).

Paying the correct amount

It's important to make sure that all the correct taxes are paid when importing your vehicle onto Spanish Number Plates. We've come across several situations where a client has used a different company, attracted by a considerably lower price, used the service and later been fined by the Spanish authorities for not having paid the correct taxes at the time of importation. Needless to say this worked out much more expensive as they still had to pay the original shortfall on the import duty.

Permanent Plates - ITV Test

In order to successfully import your car onto permanent Spanish number plates, it's necessary for your vehicle to undergo an ITV test (inspección técnica de vehículos) which is similar to an MOT test in the UK, albeit more indepth for vehicles that are being imported. Also, If the car is coming from a non EU country you also need a certificate of conformity (homologación). If your vehicle doesn't pass first time then you have one month to sort out what needs to be fixed and return for a re-test free of charge.

Our fees

Here at Car Registrations Spain we will manage the whole importation process for you, for a small flat fee. This fee includes an initial engineer's report, provision of a Certificate of Conformity (if necessary), taking your vehicle to your local ITV test station (you are welcome to accompany us, although waiting times can be fairly long), sorting all necessary paperwork, paying all relevant taxes to the various national and local government departments, repeat trips to the ITV test station for re-test if necessary, final collection of the paperwork from the ITV station, collection of new permanent Spanish Number Plates and fixing of your new Spanish registration plates on to your vehicle.
