Car Registrations Spain helping customers register vehicles onto Spanish number plates
COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still import a UK registered vehicle after Brexit?

Yes, absolutely. It is still possible to import a UK registered vehicle onto Spanish plates, although the process is not quite as straightforward as it once was.

Depending on the vehicle and your circumstances, there may be customs formalities, taxes or additional considerations. Your quotation will explain the likely position for your own vehicle as clearly as possible.

Do I need UK tax and MOT to drive my car in Spain?

Yes. If your vehicle is still on UK plates and you are driving it on Spanish roads, it should remain legal in the UK while it is still UK registered.

That normally means valid tax where applicable, a current MOT where required, and suitable insurance cover.

Can I SORN my vehicle while it is in Spain?

No. A SORN vehicle is treated as untaxed and should not be used on the road.

Using a SORN vehicle in Spain can lead to fines and serious difficulties if the vehicle is stopped by the authorities.

How long can I drive a foreign registered car in Spain?

As a general guide, a non-resident can normally drive a foreign registered vehicle in Spain for up to 6 months.

If you are a Spanish resident, the timescale is generally much shorter and is usually considered to be around 30 days.

Do I need to own a property in Spain?

No, you do not need to own a property in Spain to import and register a vehicle here.

You will, however, need proof of your Spanish address, such as a padrón, rental contract or title deeds, and you will also normally need an NIE.

Will I need to change my headlights?

If you have a UK right-hand-drive vehicle, the headlights will usually need attention before the import test in Spain.

Even many modern units still require replacement or specialist realignment. We are able to deal with even complex LED headlights, often saving customers from the cost of expensive new units.

My car has been towed away. Can you help?

In many cases, yes. We may be able to help with temporary import plates where appropriate and assist with liaising with the relevant authorities.

If this has happened to you, please contact us as quickly as possible.

Can you help with insurance quotes?

Yes. We can help arrange competitive insurance pricing for vehicles once they are registered onto Spanish plates.

We may also be able to help with temporary cover while the vehicle remains on foreign plates, where appropriate.

Can I start the import process straight away once I receive the quote?

Yes. If you are happy with the quotation we send you, we can normally begin the process straight away.

We will then guide you through the paperwork, document checks and the next steps towards the ITV import test and registration.

Does your quote include everything?

Yes, our quotations are intended to include the normal taxes, fees and charges involved in registering your vehicle onto Spanish plates.

The only additional considerations would usually be physical changes or repairs to the vehicle itself, such as tyres, headlights or standard roadworthiness items.
